My Hope is Alive
Mary Magdalene was not unaccustomed to seeing her hopes and dreams in the grave. She was familiar. But this. This was different. The very One who had restored her hope had died–horrifically. She witnessed the whole thing. Mary was not in denial. She was only looking for Jesus, dead or alive.
Mary was prepared to bury her last hope, and this time, she intended to this properly. Perhaps she felt she owed this resolve to the One who set her free. Perhaps she had decided she was going to make her peace and move on in the freedom she had been given.
Who really knows what was going on her heart but Jesus Himself? Whatever it may have been, it was responded to by Jesus–in person. She had the privilege to be the first recorded witness of her Hope resurrected before anyone else on earth. Though her vision was clouded by tears at first, it was her name on the lips of her Savior that brought clarity.
This is the kind of Hope that brings Life where there is death. It’s the kind Hope that brings Peace. It’s the kind of Hope that resurrects dead dreams. It’s the kind of Hope I have learned to live for.

“Then the disciples went away again to their own homes. But Mary stood outside by the tomb weeping, and as she wept she stooped down and looked into the tomb. And she saw two angels in white sitting, one at the head and the other at the feet, where the body of Jesus had lain. Then they said to her, “Woman, why are you weeping?” She said to them, “Because they have taken away my Lord, and I do not know where they have laid Him.” Now when she had said this, she turned around and saw Jesus standing there, and did not know that it was Jesus. Jesus said to her, “Woman, why are you weeping? Whom are you seeking?” She, supposing Him to be the gardener, said to Him, “Sir, if You have carried Him away, tell me where You have laid Him, and I will take Him away.” Jesus said to her, “Mary!” She turned and said to Him, “Rabboni!” (which is to say, Teacher).”

“Even His death could not quench her seeking. Mary went to the tomb early on the Sunday morning after His crucifixion, seeking Jesus yet again. The tomb was empty, of course; He was not there. Scripture says the disciples saw the burial cloths folded neatly in the empty tomb, Jesus’ body nowhere in sight, and they returned home (John 20:10). But not Mary. Mary stayed. She wept. She sought Him all the more.
It wasn’t closure Mary was after—it was Jesus.
“Woman, why are you weeping? Whom are you seeking?” Jesus said to the weeping Mary outside the tomb that day. And He was right—Mary was not seeking a What but a Whom—she was seeking Him. And in the grandest of ironies, she cannot recognize her Savior through her tears. But then—He says her name.” ~~MARY MAGDALENE by Amanda Bible Williams for SRT
